Shumway began playing drums at the age of 10. He has played in rock bands (The Woodchips, The Bald Eeps, State of the Union, and Afraid of Heights), high school Drum Corps, big band jazz ensembles, and orchestras.

Shumway has also had the opportunity to play with musicians such as conductor/composer Alf Clausen, trumpeters Bobby Rodriguez and Bill Bing, pianist Billy Childs, drummer Gregg Bissonette, vocalist Ian Shaw, and bassist Tom Lloyd.
